Based upon the number of registrations and earnings from January, it seems that HD continues to decline across the globe. There was nearly a 19.2% decline in sales last month, which is worse than what some analysts were predicting. It's not surprising that so few people are buying new, with such a saturated used market. Not hard to find 3 year old bikes being sold for half their original price.

This is why they need to introduce new products that aren't set at $30k. They need to approach new demographics and segments that up until now, they have shown no interest in. Basically all of their competing brands have been able to adapt to these shifts in the marketplace.

Retaining their legacy is obviously paramount, but the Livewire is an indication that the tides are finally changing. I always knew they were going to set it as a premium alternative, though the pricing is higher than what I had hoped for. Lets wait and see what early test rides have to say.

If you don't mind buying something older, there some pretty reasonable used models on the market, for first time Harley buyers. That being said you could get something much newer and more manageable from Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki etc for less.

This isn't going to be the bike that brings young riders to Harley Davidson, and its foolish to think otherwise. At its price its only going to be something that people with disposable income can afford.

Actually it might very well do that because being an expensive bike, considering what demographics say of who can afford these, it will be younger crowds. The real question will be if they'll ride the LW like it was meant to or be posers like some liter Ducati bros that only use them for show.

Truth is we don't really know who Harley is targeting with this bike. It doesn't quite have the performance you'd need as a full time commuter and its been set a price that's out of reach for most buyers. Don't think loyalists will take much interest in it at all.
