Is this more than just looks? Does it make any difference when riding?

It's all looks. I purchased my ELW used with one already attached/installed. I'm still a big 'meat flag' on the highway; no special aerodynamic advantage noticed. Similar to the hole in the rear fender...

I was thinking about making a fiberglass one with more deflection. I want it tall enough to put a phone horizontal above the main screen and maybe get some wind deflection.

Interesting... I'd be interested in seeing posts of your progress/prototypes, but you'd be wise to guard them if you're considering a sales angle in the future.

I put one on mine. I found a slight difference in air flow and I also liked the fact the gap between display and cowl (through which one could see the road) disappeared.

I also found a difference in air flow. It's not a fairing, but it smoothed out airflow over the front of the bike and made it slightly quieter at speed. Plus it keeps dirt and bugs out of that front gap.

Here is what it looks like on my Orange Fuse HD Livewire.

I like the look better than seeing a hole in the front

I found a speed blade on eBay for $120 so snagged it up. It helps a little bit. I still would love a good fairing with a windshield.
I just went with a small Puig fairing and it helped a lot. Looks pretty good on the LW.

That idiotic hole that bleeds light from the headlight up towards the rider is at least covered. But I couldn't bring my self to pay for it so I have gorrilla tape and have to remember to dry it out after riding in the rain.
