OK when swapping to the short black brake levers I figured it out. When I loosened the controls to adjust the angle the pressure from the front brake hose pushes them closer to the throttle and hence adds play. Now with it pulled far left it feel better. Any one know if the negative throw on the throttle does anything?
The throttle control inside the grip, fits in recesses in the end if the handlebar. Provided you have the grip fully seated on the control end, and the switch housings tightened on the bar, you are good. But like you found out, you should not have the swtch housing pushed out toward the end of the bar. It needs to keep the throttle grip in place. The angle of the bar doesnt matter for throttle function.
